Bees and Honey!

April 10, 2012 in Animals, Food, sustainability

We robbed one of our hives this year and ended up with about 35 kilos of the most amazing clover honey. Aaron gave me a hand and had a great time poking around and looking at the bees at work. Our neighbors run a wonderful 520 acre jersey farm, and this year it was covered in clover, resulting in a prolific harvest for the bees!

It started to crystallize recently and I ended up whipping it and producing even nicer creamed honey!!!

Sooooo good!!!

Pizza Oven

April 10, 2012 in Building, Food

Finally got it finished a month or so a go and fired it up! This is its first firing. Since then I have put a few more layers on and in fact covered it with mortar mix to help it survive the elements. This has worked really well and the general cracking has been pretty minimal after firing it up.

I also built in a little smokehouse on the side which we will try smoking some of our own bacon. I also built an eel trap recently which work really well. Our neighbors have a wonderful MASSIVE damn which is full of eels…. so at some point… smoked eel!

Yeah baby!!!!!

Easter

We got all our winter vegies planted over the last couple of weeks.

  • Brassicas
  • broad beans
  • beetroot
  • peas
  • garlic (a good rule of thumb with garlic is to get it in on St Patricks day, and it should be ready in late November, early December
  • spring onions
  • leek

This is a photo of some of the produce as a result of some our winter planting in previous years. Hopefully all this will kick in in late winter!

As soon as time permits I’ll get back into making cheeses.

Pigs

April 5, 2012 in Food

After looking at my experience keeping pigs over the past few years, Mum and Dad decided to do the same thing, and bought 2 Large Blacks (a heritage breed) from a local freerange piggery run by Jordan Grasser and his wife.

Once mum and dad took delivery of them, over the next 5 months they fed them all locally sourced food from neighbors who had more food or scraps than they knew what to do with. Along with that the pigs were able to root and snuffle around and enjoy wallowing on the balmy days of summer.

Recently they took the pigs to Sale, which upon slaughter were sent to the Trafalgar butcher who has won numerous prizes for his world class sausage making.

They arrived back as bacon, pork, ham and sausages. This evening Mum and Dad came over to dinner with the most amazing Kransky sausages, and we rejoiced in the lives of the pigs. They had lived happy, well fed and freeranging existance in comparison to the traditional supermarket battery farmed pigs, and as a result we were able to eat the pork guilt free knowing we had done all we could to ensure they lived a happy life.

Its quite uplifting knowing we can take a little more responsibility for looking after the animals to which we owe so much.
